Apache Sunrise Ceremony
Tara's face is painted, Saturday with holy pollen and here on Sunday with a floured mixture made of cornmeal, pollen and special plants from the mountains. In her hand she is holding a basket of pollen and around her are the Egan impersonates (or Mountain Spirit Dancers) that give blessings. Right she is accompanied by her godfather and members of the community dance behind her in support.
From the collection of Grrlstories (www.grrlstories.org) a project that explores the ways girls come of age in America.
